Addressing the reporters, Yves Séguy, the prefect of the Meurthe-et-Moselle region, said the plane “fell suddenly, in the immediate vicinity of the airfield,” adding that no one on the ground was wounded, AP reported.
Séguy said emergency services responded promptly after the incident and relevant authorities were collecting statements from the witnesses. “Give or take a few meters and the accident could have caused collateral casualties,” he added, Reuters reported.
According to Thierry Pechey, president of the Meurthe-et-Moselle branch of the Order of Independent Nurses, half of the skydivers who died in the crash were nurses, BBC reported citing BFM.
Local officials have reportedly said that relatives of the victims were present at the airfield when the plane crashed.
France’s transport minister Philippe Tabarot called the incident a “terrible tragedy” and said he was also travelling to the crash site along with interior minister Laurent Nunez.
