23 killed, 8 injured in explosion at Tamil Nadu fireworks manufacturing unit

At least 23 people were killed and eight injured, including two critically, after a powerful explosion tore through a fireworks factory in Tamil Nadu’s Virudhunagar district on Sunday, according to local officials.

The blast occurred in the Kattanarpatti area of Virudhunagar, a district that is home to a substantial firecracker manufacturing industry. Authorities said one firefighter was also injured during rescue operations at the site.

Emergency crews continued to search through debris from collapsed structures amid fears that additional workers may be trapped after the explosion.

The cause of the blast was not immediately clear. Investigators were expected to examine whether safety lapses or the handling of combustible chemicals played a role.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences to those who lost their loved ones. “The mishap in Virudhunagar district of Tamil Nadu is deeply distressing. I extend my condolences to those who have lost their loved ones. May the injured recover at the earliest,” the Prime Minister’s Office said in a post on X.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin said he was deeply saddened by the loss of life and offered condolences to the victims’ families. In a statement posted on X, he said he had directed senior ministers KKSSR Ramachandran and Thangam Thennarasu to rush to the site, supervise rescue efforts and provide support to affected families. He also instructed district officials to ensure immediate relief measures.

In a post on X, Stalin wrote, “The tragic news of the deaths of several people in the firecracker factory explosion that occurred in Kattanapatti, Virudhunagar district, causes immense sorrow. My deepest condolences to the families of those who lost their lives…”

Union Home Minister Amit Shah also expressed condolences, saying he was deeply saddened by the accident and that he was praying for the speedy recovery of those injured.
